Yorkshire CCC risks losing the progress it has made on tackling racism should Colin Graves complete his return to the club, a local MP has warned. The Labour MP Alex Sobel, whose Leeds North West constituency includes Yorkshire’s Headingley ground, issued a statement on Tuesday outlining a host of concerns he holds about the prospect of Graves returning.
Graves has offered an initial £1m to the cash-strapped club, with another £4m of backing promised over a five-month period, provided members ratify him as chair at an extraordinary general meeting on Friday, and agree to vote his allies Phillip Hodson, Sanjay Patel and Sanjeev Gandhi on to a much-changed board. The existing board recommended the deal to members earlier this month, but it will be a divisive move considering the racism scandal which has engulfed the club since 2020 partially took place during Graves’ first stint in charge.
